FAQ: Math

Are there recommendations for calculator purchases?

A simple calculator is suggested for Pre-algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry. Pre-Calculus needs basic statistic functions.

What academic preparation would be helpful for a student before entering Schola Math?

Students preparing to enter Algebra 1 should have completed a pre-algebra program, such as Saxon Algebra 1/2, BJU Press or Abeka Pre-Algebra.

Should the math classes be taken in a particular order?

The recommended order for High School math is Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus. Geometry can be taken after Algebra II, but Pre-Calculus relies heavily on concepts taught in Algebra II. For this reason, if the student plans to take Pre-Calculus, it is advantageous to do so the year immediately after Algebra II. Geometry may not be taken before Algebra I.

How do I know if my child is ready for a particular math class?

Visit the Saxon website and take the placement exam there. If you have questions about the result, feel free to contact the instructor.
