The Honor and Joy of Being a Schola Monitor

The Honor and Joy of Being a Schola Monitor

Being a Schola Monitor is more than just a job—it's a role that comes with responsibility, purpose, and, above all, an immense amount of joy. Every day, Schola Monitors get the privilege of serving our students in ways that go beyond the typical duties of supervision. We wear many hats, acting as nurse, disciplinarian, confidant, and friendly face all at once. It's a role that allows us to connect deeply with our students, to protect and guide them, and to bring a little extra sunshine into their school day.

At the heart of it all, being a Schola Monitor means being there for our students—not just when they need structure and guidance, but also when they need a smile, a joke, or a sweet treat. It's about building relationships, being the voice of reason when it's needed, and providing a safe, caring space where students can feel known and loved.

A Nurse When Needed

Sometimes, being a Schola Monitor means stepping into the role of a nurse. Whether it's a scraped knee from a jungle gym tumble or a stomach ache after too much excitement, we are there to lend a comforting hand and provide reassurance.

In these moments, the Schola Monitor is more than a supervisor—we're a trusted adult, a calm presence, and someone students can turn to when they're in need of comfort. It’s a responsibility we take seriously because we know how important it is for students to feel cared for in every way, whether physical or emotional.

A Disciplinarian with Heart

While we love building positive relationships with our students, we also understand the importance of discipline. As Schola Monitors, we are entrusted with upholding the rules and ensuring that the school environment remains safe and respectful for everyone. But it’s not just about enforcing rules—it’s about guiding students with patience and understanding. We strive to be firm when necessary, but we do it with kindness and a sense of fairness (and sometimes a touch of sarcasm when appropriate).

When a student steps out of line, we don’t simply correct their behavior; we use it as an opportunity to teach them, to help them understand the reasons behind the rules, and to encourage them to do better next time (or else, haha). It's all about helping our students grow, not just as learners, but as individuals who are developing respect for themselves and others. We want them to know that, while we hold them accountable, we are always there to support them along the way. Leave it to us to get a smile out of a student who is being gently rebuked.

The Friendly Face They Can Turn To

One of the best parts of being a Schola Monitor is the opportunity to be that friendly face students can turn to when they need someone to chat with. We’re not just here to supervise; we’re here to listen, to connect, and to offer a moment of lightness in a busy day. Whether it's a quick conversation between classes or a longer heart-to-heart during lunch, we love getting to know our students on a deeper level.

There’s something special about being able to chat with a student like a friend, to joke around and make them laugh, but also to be someone they can trust when they need to talk about what's on their mind. In those moments, we know we’re making a difference—not just as monitors, but as people who care deeply about the well-being of each student.

Encouragement and Support

Another vital role of the Schola Monitor is to be a source of encouragement and support. Whether it’s celebrating a student’s achievements or helping them through a tough time, we are there to uplift them. From offering a word of encouragement before a big test to cheering them on during a sports event to our beautiful renditions of Happy Birthday, we take pride in being the supportive presence and comic relief that helps our students feel confident and capable.

We understand that students are faced with new challenges and experiences around every corner. That's why we go out of our way to make sure each student feels valued and encouraged. A kind word, a smile, or even a high-five can go a long way in helping a student feel supported and ready to tackle whatever comes next.

Snack Dealer and Treat Provider

Let’s be real—who doesn’t love a little treat now and then? As Schola Monitors, we get the fun job of providing snacks and special treats on occasion, whether it's a surprise piece of candy for a job well done or a fun celebration at the end of a long week. It’s a small gesture, but it means so much to our students.

Handing out candy or organizing special treat weeks may seem like a minor duty, but it’s a way for us to show love and appreciation for our students. These small moments create a sense of connection, help brighten their day, and remind them that school is not just about work, but about enjoying the journey with those who care for them.

Guardians and Protectors

At the core of being a Schola Monitor is the responsibility to guard and protect our students—physically, emotionally, and mentally. We are the front line defense, keeping a watchful eye on students while ensuring they are safe, secure, and well taken care of. Whether it’s making sure everyone stays in the right place during lunch breaks or helping to navigate tricky social situations, we take this responsibility seriously.

Being a Schola Monitor means protecting students from harm but also offering them a safe space to express themselves, to grow, and to learn in an environment where they feel valued. We create a space where they can thrive, knowing that there are adults who care about their well-being and who are always there to offer a helping hand.

Loving Them Immensely

Above all, being a Schola Monitor is an opportunity to love our students with all our hearts. We care deeply for each of them and take joy in seeing them succeed, grow, and become the amazing people they are destined to be. Our work isn’t just about monitoring behavior or managing daily tasks—it’s about investing in the lives of our students and loving them as individuals.

There is no greater joy than seeing a student’s face light up when they receive praise, a treat, or just a moment of connection. We are honored to be part of their school journey, and every day brings new opportunities to make a positive impact.

The Front Line, and We Love Every Minute of It

In the end, being a Schola Monitor is not just a job—it’s a calling. We are the ones who help guide, protect, encourage, and support our students in their school lives. We take pride in being the front line defense, offering our students a safe, loving, and supportive environment where they can grow and learn. And we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

So, whether we’re offering a friendly smile, a moment of guidance, or a sweet treat, we do it with love and joy. Being a Schola Monitor is a privilege, and we cherish every minute of it!
