Curriculum

Schola Kindergarten gives young students a gentle introduction to a more structured learning environment by fostering habits of attention and listening, exploring words, language, and numbers, developing fine motor skills, and encouraging the child’s natural sense of wonder through stories, music, games, and more. They will also explore biblical history using a children’s story Bible.

Description

  • Language: Language instruction at the kindergarten level begins with training students to be attuned to the sound of properly spoken language. Students will be introduced to narration, a wonderful tool to develop skills of attention and speaking as the student narrates part of a story after hearing it. Rich reading selections feature wholesome stories and poems.
  • Reading and Writing: Pre-reading and writing begin with recognizing the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Students will learn vowel sounds as they move toward reading simple words. Students will use tracing and copying to foster fine motor skills, handwriting, language skills, and attention to details. Content, vocabulary and structure become part of the student's language skills.
  • Numbers: Students will learn to recognize numbers and count from 1-100, begin simple addition and subtraction, and work on time-telling skills.
  • Nature Investigations: Students will explore the beauty and wonder of creation, discussing such topics as seasons, animals, the weather, and the senses.
  • Bible: Students will take a big picture walk through the Old and New Testaments. They will also memorize portions of scripture, recognizing that the Word of God is the ultimate foundation of all truth and knowledge. Developing the skill of memorization trains the mind to pay attention and focus intensely, thereby paying dividends in every area of learning.
  • Music: On campus days, students will listen to beautiful music. They will use song, movement, and clapping to develop their own musical skills.
  • Art: On campus days, students will have the opportunity to “feast upon” age-appropriate, beautiful artwork. They will also use drawing and coloring to begin developing their own artistic skills.
